The UNHCR is seeking a qualified Nurse to be based in its Kibondo office, providing critical healthcare services to UNHCR personnel and eligible dependents. This role focuses on primary healthcare, emergency response, and medical advocacy in a challenging operational context. The position reports technically to the Regional Medical Officer (RMO) in Nairobi and administratively to the UNHCR Head of Office in Kibondo.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide primary healthcare services for UNHCR personnel and dependents.
    • Perform clinical assessments and manage acute and chronic conditions.
    • Facilitate access to diagnostic, laboratory, and imaging facilities.
    • Coordinate with the UN Clinic Doctor in Kasulu for referrals and follow-ups.
  • Respond to emergency calls, delivering Pre-Hospital Emergency Care (PHEC) 24/7.
    • Stabilize life-threatening emergencies and liaise with medical facilities and the RMO for MEDEVACs.
  • Deliver health education and promotion programs, including:
    • Malaria and dengue prevention.
    • Food and water hygiene.
    • First responder training and COVID-19 awareness.
  • Conduct workplace health assessments and recommend preventive measures.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and advocate for patient care and safety.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain the clinic’s inventory, ensuring supplies and equipment are always operational.
  • Collaborate with UNHCR RMO and UN Clinic personnel for facility assessments and medical referrals.
  • Maintain medical records in a secure database and prepare monthly clinic reports.
  • Ensure proper disposal of hazardous medical waste in coordination with the UN Clinic Doctor.

Qualifications and Experience

Education & Certifications

  • Registered Professional Nurse with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited nursing program.
  • Certifications in ECG, CPR/Basic Life Support, and ACLS (preferred).
  • National nursing registration and license.
  • Additional training in primary healthcare or midwifery (desirable).

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience, preferably in multicultural environments.
  • Experience in trauma, emergency care, and health administration.
  • Familiarity with UN operations or humanitarian crisis settings is highly desirable.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of public health practices, occupational safety, and emergency medical response.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and other office software.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and analytical skills.

Languages

  • Proficiency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of the local language or other UN working languages is an advantage.
