About the Role

As the Tanzania Agroforestry Associate, you will lead One Acre Fund’s ambitious agroforestry program in the Southern Highlands, managing a team of about 25 permanent staff and 300 temporary staff across 4–6 regions. You will report to the Agroforestry Manager and be responsible for designing and implementing impactful agroforestry systems, increasing farmers’ resilience, and delivering substantial economic benefits.

Key Responsibilities

Program Design and Research

  • Conduct field and desk research to develop agroforestry systems that maximize farmer impact.
  • Assess farmer demand for various agroforestry species, including timber, fruit, and soil-improving trees.
  • Collaborate with the MEL (Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning) team to conduct annual impact assessments.

Farmer Training

  • Develop and oversee training content tailored to tree species and agroforestry systems to maximize farmer returns.

Team Management

  • Manage the performance of three initial direct reports, with oversight of a broader operational team.

Tree Production and Logistics

  • Oversee the production and sourcing of tree seedlings through partnerships and centralized/decentralized nurseries.
  • Develop models to distribute seedlings across the Southern Highlands efficiently.

Qualifications and Requirements

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

Essential Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in smallholder agroforestry/agriculture, with managerial responsibilities in field operations.
  • Master’s degree in Forestry or a related field.
  • Proficiency in statistical software such as SPSS, STATA, or R.
  • Proven project management skills and experience executing strategy within tight timelines.
  • Professional proficiency in English; knowledge of Swahili is an advantage.

Preferred Experience

  • Knowledge of tree species and their application in improving soil fertility and resilience.
  • Familiarity with logistical challenges in rural settings.
